Here is what a valid prescription has to carry, why the channel it comes from matters, and what CuraVerto charges to send one. Sending a prescription over WhatsApp is not the grey area it can feel like. India's Telemedicine Practice Guidelines 2020 explicitly allow a signed prescription to reach a patient as a photo, a scan, a digital copy, or an e-prescription, sent by email, WhatsApp or any other electronic channel. What is actually in question is the document itself and where it comes from, not whether WhatsApp is an acceptable channel at all. CuraVerto delivers every prescription as a WhatsApp message sent from the clinic's own WhatsApp Business number, logged against the patient's record, on every plan including Essential. ## What a prescription has to carry, whichever channel sends it A valid prescription in India generally has to identify the prescribing doctor by name and registration number, carry the date, identify the patient, and carry the doctor's signature, physical or digital. That baseline does not change because the delivery moved from paper to WhatsApp. The Telemedicine Practice Guidelines 2020, issued by the Board of Governors in supersession of the Medical Council of India together with NITI Aayog, are the primary source for what changes when a consultation happens remotely: what can be prescribed, when a video consultation is required first, and how the signed record can be transmitted. Read the guidelines directly rather than a vendor's summary of them. ## A personal WhatsApp number and the official Business API are not the same thing Sending a prescription photo from a doctor's own phone works, and plenty of clinics do exactly that. The differences show up later, not in the moment. A clinic's WhatsApp Business number is shared across front desk and doctors and does not leave with any one person's phone. Messages sent through the official API follow Meta-approved templates rather than an ad-hoc chat. And a prescription sent from inside a clinic system is logged against the patient's record at the moment it is sent, where a message on a personal phone lives only in that phone's chat history. None of this is a claim that a personal WhatsApp is against the rules. It is a record-keeping and continuity question, not a legal one. ## What it costs CuraVerto meters WhatsApp utility templates, the category a prescription delivery falls into, at ₹0.15 per message from a prepaid wallet. Patient replies inside the 24-hour service window are free. That ₹0.15 rate is for utility templates only, CuraVerto's marketing broadcast rate is a separate ₹0.88 per message and does not apply to prescription delivery. There is no platform fee or per-seat charge on top. ## What happens after the message is sent A point Rx tool's job ends once it generates a PDF and hands it to WhatsApp, and that is a real and useful job. In CuraVerto, the prescription is part of the patient's record from the moment it is written, so its WhatsApp delivery is logged against the same patient, the consultation it came from, and the invoice if there is one. If a delivery ever needs to be confirmed later, the record already has it, rather than depending on whichever phone the message went out from. ## Where this sits in CuraVerto Digital prescription delivery over WhatsApp is on CuraVerto's Essential plan at ₹9,999 per year, the entry tier, alongside the WhatsApp booking bot. It is not a premium add-on reserved for a higher tier. For a solo GP evaluating clinic software for the first time, this is the plan the prescription question actually lands on. ### Sources - [Telemedicine Practice Guidelines 2020](https://www.mohfw.gov.in/pdf/Telemedicine.pdf) — Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Board of Governors in supersession of the Medical Council of India, with NITI Aayog ### Related reading - [What the Official WhatsApp Cloud API Really Costs a Clinic](https://curaverto.com/blog/whatsapp-cloud-api-clinic-cost-no-markup) - [WhatsApp-Native EMR vs WhatsApp Integration](https://curaverto.com/blog/whatsapp-native-emr-vs-whatsapp-integration) - [DPDPA Compliance for Indian Clinics: 8 Obligations](https://curaverto.com/blog/dpdpa-compliance-clinics-india) - [CuraVerto WhatsApp automation](https://curaverto.com/solutions/whatsapp-automation) - [CuraVerto pricing plans](https://curaverto.com/pricing) --- Canonical: https://curaverto.com/blog/whatsapp-prescription-rules-india Contact: sales@curaverto.com This document is CuraVerto's own description of its product.
